S.U.M. CLUB CONSTITUTION


PREAMBLE



We, the members of the Simpson University Mathematics Club, do hereby establish this constitution in order to fellowship with people of similar interest, discuss our ideas with peers and superiors, and to use our interests to grow in the LORD.

ARTICLE I: NAME



SECTION 1: NAME



The name of the organization shall be “Simpson University Mathematics Club” and shall henceforth be referred to as “S.U.M. Club.”

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE & COMMITMENT



SECTION 1: PURPOSE



The primary purpose of the S.U.M. Club is to promote enthusiasm and foster a greater understanding of mathematics on the Simpson University campus by providing social and intellectual forums available to all students. This will be accomplished by exposing members to various branches of mathematics in a casual, friendly, and fun atmosphere.

SECTION 2: COMMITMENT



The S.U.M. Club is committed to fulfilling and abiding by Simpson University’s academic club policies.

ARTICLE III: OFFICERS & FACULTY ADVISOR



SECTION 1: EXECUTIVE OFFICER TITLES



Executive Officers serving the S.U.M. Club shall be the President, Vice President, and Secretary/Treasurer.

SECTION 2: OFFICER RESPONSIBILITIES



The President is responsible for presiding over meetings and non-electoral voting processes, organizing contests and social activities, arranging student and faculty talks, and other general organizational and PR responsibilities.

The Vice President is responsible for updating the constitution, writing and updating a Club website, and collaborating with the President on club activities.

The Secretary/Treasurer is the designated Student Senate Liaison and is otherwise responsible for taking minutes at meetings and managing the funds of the club.

Responsibilities of appointed officers will be specified by the Executive officers.

SECTION 3: APPOINTED OFFICERS



Appointed officers will be appointed by the executive officers and approved by the faculty advisor. Appointed officers may be recalled by a two-thirds majority vote at any designated business meeting.

SECTION 4: TERM OF OFFICE



Executive officers will serve for a maximum of one academic year per election. Officers can be reelected or reappointed. The appointment of an officer shall not exceed the current term served by the Executive officers.

SECTION 5: OFFICE REQUIREMENTS



All officers will be and remain in good standing with Simpson University. No officer will be on any form of probation with the school. All executive offices must be filled by undergraduate students who are majoring or minoring in Mathematics.

SECTION 6: STUDENT SENATE



At least one of the executive officers will attend every senate meeting and serve as the voice of the Math Club.

SECTION 7: FACULTY ADVISOR



The Faculty Advisor shall be appointed by the Mathematics Department pending a vote of approval by simple majority vote at the beginning of the school year. The adviser has no vote in the organization and will meet the requirements established in the adviser-club agreement of the S.U.M. Club.

ARTICLE IV: MEMBERSHIP



SECTION 1: MEMBERSHIP



Membership in the S.U.M. Club will be open to all students interested in mathematics. All members register with the Math Club President and are able to vote at the next club meeting. No dues will be collected.

SECTION 2: FACULTY & STAFF



All faculty and staff interested in mathematics are encouraged to participate in S.U.M. Club meetings. Faculty and staff will not be allowed full membership rights. In particular, faculty and staff are not granted voting rights.

SECTION 3: MEMBERSHIP RIGHTS



Members will be allowed to attend all meetings and will be allowed one vote per issue/election. The President’s right to vote is revoked, unless otherwise specified.

SECTION 4: NON-MEMBER RIGHTS



Non-members will be allowed to attend all meetings but will not be allowed a vote in S.U.M. Club affairs. Non-members will be allowed to participate in any contest, unless otherwise specified.

AETICLE V: ELECTION OF OFFICERS



SECTION 1: ELECTIONS



Executive officers for the next school year will be elected at the final meeting of the current school year. Responsibilities are assumed upon completion of the vote tally.

SECTION 2: VACANCY



Should any executive officer position become vacant at any time during their term, an election will be held to fill that officer position at the soonest available time. The newly elected officer will finish out the current term. No existing executive officer may be nominated as a candidate to fill a vacancy.

SECTION 3: RECALL



An elected officer can be recalled by a two-thirds majority of vote cast at a designated business meeting.

SECTION 4: VOTING



Each member in attendance at the time of the election will be accorded one vote per officer.

SECTION 5: VOTING SYSTEM



Elections will take place in the form of a secret ballot. Executive officers will be elected by a plurality vote; ties will be broken by a run-off. In the event that quorum is not achieved, voting may take the form of mail-in/email-in ballot.

SECTION 6: NOMINEE REQUIREMENTS



Nominees for executive officer positions must be in good standing with Simpson University and with the S.U.M. Club.

SECTION 7: NOMINATION PROCESS



Nominations must be submitted to the S.U.M. Club President until the day before the election is to be held.

ARTICLE VI: MEETINGS



SECTION 1: MEETING SCHEDULE



The Executive Officers will create a tentative meeting schedule and distribute it to club members at the first meeting of the semester.

SECTION 2: MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS



All members must attend a majority of meetings in order to retain full voting and membership rights.

SECTION 3: DETERMINATION OF QUORUM



A quorum shall consist of three members, not including executive officers.

SECTION 4: VOTING



Each member present at the time of the vote will be accorded one vote per issue. Issues will be decided by a simple majority vote, unless otherwise specified in advance. In the event of a tie, the President will cast the deciding vote. In the event that quorum is not achieved, voting may take the form of mail-in/email-in ballot.

SECTION 5: AGENDA



Agendas for business meetings will be distributed at least one week before the meeting is held. At the request of three members, additional agenda items may be added up to the day before the meeting is held.

ARTICLE VII: AMENDMENTS



SECTION 1: VOTING



Amendments will be voted on at the last meeting of every semester. Amendments must be submitted to the Executive officers by the penultimate meeting of the semester.

SECTION 2: VOTING SYSTEM



Amendments to this constitution will be ratified by a two-thirds majority vote.

SECTION 3: VOTING REQUIREMENTS



Only members retaining full rights and present at the time of the vote will be allowed a vote.
